Great piece! There’s nothing like a framework in which to think about many seemingly disparate but important issues.

Dear Wendi and Bill,

Thanks for sharing these 15 lessons!

I earned my single engine VFR license around 1968 and passed the commercial pilot ground school exam; flew mainly out of what was once the Opa Locka Navel Air Station.

Nowadays, I teach Strategic Management at both the under graduate and graduate levels. So I instantly grasped the connection between successful aircraft piloting and organizational leadership/management. In fact for years I have drawn an analogy between the principles of flight in terms of airfoils/flight surfaces and air speed and Michael Porter's 5-forces analysis of interactions among players in strategic industry groups.

Mr. Wargo's analogy goes well beyond mine in scope and effectively gets at what I have found to be the most difficult teaching task and lessons about strategic management as student may learn. For lack of a better term I would call it the dynamics of effective organizational leadership or management.

I also think the lessons here go beyond management to life in general. The issue of retirement comes up with some frequency among folks my age. And I can envision that being something like preparations for a landing where you don't want it to be under emergency conditions.

Hi Wendi & Bill,
From my perspective of a graphic designer, this flight training article has concepts that I see as good business practices for my own print projects. I even actually do a 'pre-flight cross check', before ordering a print job, it's a valuable technique for avoiding costly mistakes.

I enjoyed the article.
