Project Management For Mere Mortals®

Live Lessons DVD with book supplement

The Tools, Techniques, Teaming, and Politics of Project Management

Author: Claudia M. Baca, PMP

Publisher: Addison Wesley Professional (June 25, 2007)

Project Management for Mere Mortals (book or video) walks you through the tools and techniques of five project process groups: initiation, planning, execution, monitoring & controlling, and closing. Each chapter is designed to teach you how to start these techniques immediately in your organization by examining each topic with four different focuses: project management tools and techniques, building an effective project team, dealing with organizational politics and finally a case study. The case study will weave all of the chapter topics together into a sample project that progresses throughout every chapter.

Wendi and I have known Claudia for over twenty years, and trust her and like her. But that isn’t why we’re selling her stuff here. The reason why is that Claudia stands out as one of the few project management gurus who actually understands:

  • How to articulate the point of a project, and that it’s vital to do so correctly. Lots of time and money – lots! – are wasted because people screw this up.
  • How to spell out the authorities project managers need to succeed, even in complex “matrix” environments with “borrowed resources.” There’s a best way to do this, and Claudia describes it.
  • How to keep things as simple as possible, but no simpler (borrowing a quotation from Einstein). She can help you tailor the “amount of project management” you use to what you really need.

We have always been proud to call Claudia friend and colleague; now we’re proud to be able to spread a little of her pragmatic wisdom.

Incidentally, Claudia helped author the Project Management Institute’s standards for Organizational Project Management (how organizations should organize so as to be proficient at project management), and she was the first person, globally, to be certified in conducting OPM assessments.

So . . . she knows her way around.
